Turkey Seed Market Witnessing Expansion Supported by Progressive Policies Adopted by the Government & Rise in Production of Organic Food Products: Ken Research

January 2018

The government implemented structural reforms in 1980s, to transform the seed industry from public based to an industry dominated by private companies. Owing to this reform the industry was liberalized and new and global players entered the market which created health competition and resulted in overall growth of the market. The seed market in Turkey has witnessed significant growth since 2006 after the implementation of the new seed law. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MinFAL) encourages the farmers to use certified seeds. The government extensively supports breeding activities through public and private breeding programmes and there is a huge breeding programme that is maintained by the MinFAL. Majority of the demand in the Turkish seed market is for cereal crops like wheat and barley. The seeds for wheat and barley are domestically produced. Turkey is a major exporter of hybrid corn and sunflower seeds to Europe, Russia and Ukraine. In terms of revenue Turkey is a net importer of seeds. The Turkish government allows imports of only vegetable, forage, grass, sweet corn and popcorn seeds in the country. The use of genetically modified crops is restricted in Turkey.

The seed market in Turkey has presence of major global players like DuPont, Monsanto, Syngenta and Rijk Zwaan. These companies largely dominate the Turkish seed market. Most of the Indigenous players in the market majorly produce seeds for cereal crops like wheat and barley. These local companies are also focusing on breeding seeds that are specifically suited for agricultural conditions in Turkey. A number of breeding programmes are also maintained by the government under various department and institutes. Organic farming culture is also gradually gaining traction in the country owing to the demand of organic products from European market. However, domestic consumption of organic food products in Turkey is less, this presents an opportunity of growth for everyone involved in production of organic food products including seed companies.

The report titled “Turkey Seed Market by Technology Type (Open Pollinated and Hybrid Seeds) by Crop Type (Wheat, Barley, Maize, Sunflower, Soybean, Cotton, Forage and Fruits & Vegetable Seeds) - Outlook to 2022” by Ken Research suggested a growth at a positive CAGR in revenues in Turkey seed market due to increase in research and breeding programmes by companies, increase in organic farming and growth in production of food products in the next 5 years till 2022.
