Base Metals Mining in Sweden to 2020

Executive Summary

Base Metals Mining in Sweden to 2020

Summary

Sweden has substantial zinc and lead deposits, along with deposits of iron ore, copper, gold and silver. Political stability, mining expertise and a strong mining equipment industry support the country's mining operations. Sweden stood 10th in the world with 1.1 million tonnes (Mt), or 1.3% of global lead reserves at the end of 2014. Substantial lead deposits are located primarily in four regions: Dalarna, Örebro, Norrbotten, and Västerbotten. The country's zinc deposits are in the form of sedimentary exhalative (Sedex), Mississippi Valley Type (MVT), volocanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) and in the form of zinc oxide, mainly located in the Boliden area.

The base metal industry is dominated by two companies: Boliden AB and Lundin Mining Corporation. The industry is governed by the Geological Survey of Sweden (Sveriges Geologiska Undersökning) and the Mining Inspectorate of Sweden (Bergsstaten). The Mineral Act (1991:45) is the regulating law.

Scope
