Natural Rubber Standard Report Q2/2018

Executive Summary

VIETNAM NATURAL RUBBER INDUSTRY

Rubber trees are grown mainly in Southeast Asia, Africa and a small part of the Americas. Thailand, Indonesia, China, Malaysia and Vietnam are 5 countries having the largest cultivated area in the world. By the end of December 2017, the structure of rubber production in the world remained stable with the natural rubber rate of 46.7%, equivalent to 13.34 million tons, synthetic rubber figures of 53.3% and 15.2 million, respectively. Asia continues to dominate the supply of natural rubber with contribution rate of 90.9% of global volume in 2017. In 2017, global natural rubber export was estimated at xx.xx billion USD with output of about xx,xxx thousand tons, increased 38.63% in value and 19.37% in output.

Asian accounted for the largest proportion share of 86.3% in terms of structure of natural rubber export by volume, reaching the estimated output of x,xxx thousand tons in 2017. Thailand are the country having the largest export volume in the region, followed by Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar.

Vietnam has been the leading rubber producing country in Asia since 2013, surpassing India, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Exploited output of Vietnam natural rubber was estimated to reach x,xxx.x thousand tons in 2017, up 4.72% compared to 2016 due to favorable weather condition in the early months of year. In 2017, natural rubber consumption was estimated at xxx.xx thousand tons, up 5.3% over the same period of 2016.

The main products of Vietnam rubber industry are natural rubber, and most of the exploited output is used for exporting. The volume of natural rubber consumed domestically is low, accounting only 20% of total natural rubber output in the country. Currently, Vietnam ranks the third position of rubber exports in the world, after only Thailand and Indonesia. In the first three months of 2018, the total natural rubber export volume reached xxx.xx thousand tons with the estimated value of xxx.x million USD. Compared to the same period of 2017, natural rubber export in the first 3 months of 2018 increased 4.7% in volume but decreased 24.2% in value. China continues to be the largest export market of Vietnam with xxx.xx thousand tons, valued at xxx.xx million.

Despite being the third largest exporter of rubber in the world, Vietnam still imports a large quantity of rubber raw materials due to poor quality of processed rubber. The domestic market continue to increase, abundant sources of goods. In the first three months of 2018, the natural rubber imports of Vietnam reached xxx thousand tons, valued at xxx million USD.
